The warm break in the clouds does not resolve the darkness around it. Instead, its reflection draws a bright path across the water, suggesting that illumination here is distant, conditional, and hard-won. The pale horses appear to carry the riders through a world governed by forces larger than themselves, while the surrounding indigo and violet atmosphere keeps the promise of arrival from becoming certainty.

The riders’ small scale against the sweeping sky gives their movement a collective, almost legendary character.
