about this painting:
LOVE BY THE LAKE
Magic of the season
We all love classic Christmas with snow, fairy lights and piles of presents. It’s so nice to sit at the family table, near the fire, on a cold frosty night, eat hot turkey, exchange idle remarks and watch the heavy shroud of snowflakes falling behind the glass like a white rain that is never going to stop… Unfortunately, it rarely snows in some countries. There are people who never saw snow in their entire life. But that doesn’t mean the spirit of Christmas doesn’t set foot in their area! And wonderful works by Leonid Afremov prove that. If you want to feel Christmas mood even though it’s not the season yet, canvas paintings by this amazing post-impressionist artist will tune you in to the right wavelength!
Christmas in raindrops
At first sight, the scenery in the picture doesn’t even remotely resemble traditional winter. It’s a usual rainy night like dozens we’ve seen before. But it keeps drawing your eye like a magnet:
· The empty alley is wet with puddles that reflect a multitude of bright lamppost lights turning the park into a miraculous vision from one of your dreams.
· Heavy with sparkling raindrops, naked tree branches seem to be covered with magical leaves of different colors that add to the surreal atmosphere of the painting.
· The end of the alley is hidden in the mist; the background is a patchwork of colorful specks echoing the main palette of the canvas.
· There is not a soul around; only a lonesome silhouette of a man walking in the rain tells us this view is actually real.
The man is hurrying somewhere covering his head with a large umbrella, or maybe simply taking a stroll to get some fresh air and arrange his thoughts. We can only guess where he is heading and who is waiting for him there. Perhaps, he’ll take off his coat in the hall of a cozy house, full of kids running forth to greet him and with a lovely wife serving Christmas dinner. Or maybe he’ll drop into a crowded bar and land at the counter, sipping beer on his own among total strangers. It may even happen that he has nowhere to go and there is only an old dog waiting for him at home. Whatever his plans are, the painting suggests that everything is going to be ok and this Christmas will be special even if you don’t count on it!
