about this painting:
What do you feel when you look at the waves of the sea glimpsing just under your feet? Do you feel afraid of uncontrollable powers of this element? Or, safe because warm waters of the sea remind you of the mother’s womb?
The sea has always been a mystery for humans. It seemed quiet and peaceful at one moment and then suddenly turned it a roaring mass of water. It gave people food and money but took their lives instead.
They started to tell each other legends and fairy tales about gods and dark creatures living in the water and decided their destiny.
THE GOD OF THE SEA
Ancient Greeks believed that there were three the most powerful gods: Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. The first one was the God of the Thunder, the second one ruled the World of the Dead and the last one was the God of the Sea. Just from this, we can already see how important water element was for Greeks, the best navigators in the Ancient World.
Here are some more facts about this divinity:
- Poseidon was really strong and powerful. He wanted to be considered the most important god. However, after the war with titans he got control under water. He had many conflicts with his brothers and sisters because of that.
- He lived on the seabed in a luxurious palace with his wife and son. He drove a chariot harnessed with sea horses, surrounded by his servants. He was very imperious, vindictive and mistrustful. He punished heavily people who offend him.
- Poseidon was believed to be a protector of navigators as well as of horse riders. One of his epithets was Hippios, associated with horses.
PAINTING OF THE SEA
Leonid Afremov is just one of many artists who were charmed by the sea. On this lighthouse oil painting, he tried to catch a magical moment when the last ray of the sun hides behind the horizon.
The sky is painted in all shadows of yellow, red and blue, and seems so real! Only a real artist can recreate the flow of life without necessarily resorting to hyperrealistic techniques. The lighthouse oil painting seems to be casting light in the room as if it was trying to attract viewers to come closer.
The beauty of a deserted seacoast is so soothing and relaxing. It will definitely keep you warm during long winter evenings.
