about this painting:

LAKE OKEECHOBEE SUNSET FISHING

Relaxing activity

Have you ever tried fishing? Some people think sitting motionlessly with a rod for hours is pretty boring. For others, however, it is the most exciting and entertaining thing. Of course, remaining calm and patient long enough for the fish to swallow the bait is quite challenging, but that’s the charm of it! When, after a long time of waiting, you feel the line stretch and twitch and pull out your first catch, it’s a huge triumph! And then, frying this very fish on the pan, you can be proud it was you who caught and made this lovely dinner. That’s why people keep fetching their rods, hopping into their boats and fishing from early morning till dusk. This unhurried and relaxing pastime is depicted in Leonid Afremov’s painting commemorating a trip to lake Okeechobee, a picturesque place in Florida where the artist lives.

Curious facts about lake Okeechobee

Before talking about the painting itself, let’s find out a bit more about this mysterious lake that has such an unusual name obviously having some Indian roots. Here are a few facts about it:

1.      Also called Florida’s Inland Sea, Okeechobee is the largest lake of the state. Covering half the territory of the Rhode Island, lake Okeechobee has the size of 730 square miles (almost 2000 square kilometers).

2.      However, at such a size the lake is very shallow. Its maximum depth doesn’t exceed 3 meters.

3.      In the language of a local indigenous tribe, Okeechobee means ‘big water.’

4.      The lake is known as the area of disastrous hurricanes. So fishing there might not be a very good idea after all!

No leaving without a catch

The painting shows a lonely boat with a man who stayed fishing till very sunset. Mirroring the colors of the glowing sky, the calm, steady surface of the water seems to be on fire. The sun is hanging low over the horizon, casting a sparkling glade across the lake. In a few minutes, it will disappear and the chilly blue mist lurking in the reed will fill the air. But for now, the fisherman in the boat still has time for his last strike. Who knows, perhaps it will be the biggest fish he ever caught! And then it is definitely worth waiting. But even if not, the process itself is equally delightful. So let’s wish this obstinate man good luck and enjoy the view!

Testimonials
I bought Misty Mood a few weeks ago, and it's the first painting I have ever bought, which is saying a lot for a 30+ year old. I absolutely adore the colors and the calmness of the painting, but I love the over all style.
