about this painting:
JESTER
Jesters in history
The trade of the jester is long gone, but this image has remained in culture as a quite contradictory symbol. In old times, it used to be a person who was obliged to entertain the king and his guests. Every jester had to know a lot of jokes and perform different tricks that would put smiles on the faces of people. History tells us that jesters first appeared in Ancient Rome. In the Middle Ages, kingdoms used to hire jesters of all sorts whose skills included playing music, juggling, guessing riddles and so on. The tradition of keeping jesters at court was interrupted with the arrive of the Age of Enlightenment.
Some interesting facts about jesters:
· They were officially deemed inviolable, but there were incidents jesters were executed by the king.
· Traditionally, the jester is depicted in a cap with bells.
· In Russia, jesters decorated themselves with pea straw.
· The jester was allowed to speak more than anyone else under the disguise of a joke
· There are examples of jesters being the king’s best friends and financial advisors.
Sad jester
The jester painting by Leonid Afremov is painted in a beautiful and amazing style. The artist depicts his hero in a traditional cap and long-nosed shoes, playing mandolin in front of the invisible audience. Covering the entire canvas, contrasting multi-colored strokes of the palette knife form a vibrant whirlpool where all shades of the rainbow are mixed together in bold combinations. But the main trait of the picture is the expression of the character’s face. If you look closely into his eyes, you will see that there is no laughter in them. The jester’s gaze is indifferent and empty; it seems to be directed inside rather than to the viewers. Perhaps, he is tired to perform the king's orders or maybe he understands how meaningless and monotonous his life is no matter how entertaining and careless it may seem to others. This adds a certain degree of mystery and ambiguity to Leonid Afremov’s painting that strikes us with its unexpectedly bright hues and phantasmagoric aura.
