about this painting:
The nature of art
Music and painting are somewhat related. While an artist uses various shades of colors and different types of strokes to depict the world as they see it, a musician paints with shades of sounds and splashes of chords. Can you express music through color? Can you actually see music? Leonid Afremov definitely thinks so! Intricate and versatile as a jazz improvisation, this portrait of two jazzmen playing a tune we can’t hear, but can guess in the arrangement of motley strokes on the canvas erases the boundaries between art genres and make all of our senses work as one.
Painting the sound
The duo on the picture is playing trumpet and double bass. We can’t discern their faces or any other details of their appearance. There are no distinct lines separating them from the color-speckled background and they simply dissolve in it as if being lost in the music they’re playing. Vivid splashes are coming right out of the trumpet and seem to be dripping from the bass strings washing over the musicians in iridescent waves and swelling like a rainbow nuclear cloud. The sophisticated mixture of shades keenly conveys the nature of jazz music – vibrant, diverse and fascinating. Sounding in chords of color, this music is just as good as the one meant for our ears!
