IN THE HILLS - oil painting on canvas by Leonid Afremov

IN THE HILLS — A vibrant hillside scene unfolds around an ornate, pale architectural landmark, where dense greenery, winding paths, and cool waterways create a lively sense of place. Warm illumination brings the structure forward against richly colored foliage.

The vertical composition centers on a tall tower and layered façade articulated by arched windows, columns, balconies, and pale cream-and-ochre surfaces. Trees press in from every side, enclosing the building within a lush valley atmosphere. In the foreground, a curving walkway leads inward toward the architecture, while a small arched bridge and narrow blue-green waterway anchor the lower right. Distinct, mosaic-like brushstrokes build the scene with cobalt, turquoise, emerald, orange, gold, red, magenta, violet, and cream. Bright highlights contrast with cool blue-green shadows, giving the image an energetic, impressionistic character.

Its strong vertical structure suits spaces that benefit from an architectural focal point, while the layered foliage and curving route invite extended viewing. Place it where saturated color can enliven a living area, study, hallway, or hospitality setting. The combination of grand forms, abundant nature, and vivid textured brushwork offers a picturesque escape with a spirited, garden-like atmosphere.
