about this painting:

Horse racing

Heroes in the saddles

Horse Racing, this splendid oil painting by Leonid Afremov, will be the best choice for amateurs of horses – these, perhaps, the most graceful and beautiful animals – and equestrian sport.

Those who have equestrian class for the first time feel a kind of fear of the large animal. But watching experienced riders masterfully manage such powerful animals and overcome various obstacles on horses the fear disappears and you decide to come nearer and get acquainted with the horse. And here you’re in a horse club in a closed arena. Some fear and uncertainty still present, but nevertheless you dare climb a horse.

Little by little you start riding. It seems that you ride pretty fast, but in fact the horse simply walks and you see your instructor always following you, looking at you with a sly smile. But the feelings you have  riding on a horse for the first time in your life are unforgettable and inexpressible, you’re frightened and happy at the same time. With every new ride you become more confident and finally you reach the level of the professional rider...  The artist tried to express namely the atmosphere of the real racing with its emotions, atmosphere, the sense of competitiveness and passion!

Royal amusement

Many of you know that horse racing appeared in Britain but do you anything about official racing competitions? We want to tell you about one of the most famous racing competitions held in Ascot, England.

The races in Ascot, then called East Coast, was started by Queen Anna. One day, visiting her lands in the vicinity of Windsor Castle, Queen Anne drew attention to a vast wasteland. It seemed to her that this area is ideal for long gallop races. With the help of designer William Lowen, carpenter William Ehrlibraun and painter Benjamin Clacett, the first race tracks were built. And August 11, 1711, Saturday, the first races took place in Ascot. The Queen established a prize of 100 guineas. Any mare, stallion or gelding aged no less than six years could participate in the competition. According to the conditions, the rider was supposed to weigh 76 kg. In honor of the founder of horse racing, the riders compete for the Queen of Anne's Prize to this day. In 1794, Windsor master George Slingsby built a rostrum, accommodating 1650 people and existed until 1838. And there are some more important dates:

  • In 1813 the Parliament issued the "Enclosure Act", according to which the Ascot wasteland was to be used as a venue for horse racing for.
  • The first Gold Cup - the main royal prize - was drawn in 1807.
  • At the Golden Cup of Ascot 1844 the Russian Emperor Nicholas was present.
