HOLLOW FACE - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

At the edge of recognition, Hollow Face turns the night into a charged encounter between presence and perception. Its enormous, face-like arrangement seems less like a portrait than a force gathering above the shoreline, where radiance and darkness remain inseparable. The work invites a reading of vision itself - what appears to watch, what remains unreadable, and what the solitary observer cannot escape noticing.

The two luminous eye-like openings hold the scene in suspension. They suggest awareness without offering a human expression, while the long central descent and shadowed horizontal mark allow the formation to hover between apparition and landscape. Its ambiguity is deliberate in effect, making the surrounding sky feel less like weather than an unsettled state of mind.

Below, a small figure stands beside the water with a purple balloon, an unexpected note of vulnerability against the immense presence overhead. The figure's scale does not resolve the mystery; it intensifies it, placing a fragile, almost childlike emblem of release within a scene that feels watchful and severe.

A band of fiery light crosses the lower distance and continues into the water, giving the darkness a narrow passage toward illumination. Along the far shore, scattered structures remain barely asserted, grounding the vision without explaining it. The result is a tense meditation on being seen beneath a sky that may be imagined, elemental, or both.
