HOLLOW CATHEDRAL - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

Within its vaulted darkness, Hollow Cathedral presents arrival as an inward passage rather than a destination. The high arch gathers the surrounding indigo and violet into a chamber where colored openings seem to hold separate intensities of silence. At the center, a small dark vessel and its upright white light suggest a fragile direction through an immense, sheltering space.

That central glow is not simply an answer to the surrounding darkness; it makes the darkness feel necessary. Warm amber and orange radiance rises from below, while cool blues and turquoises recede into the architectural heights, creating a tension between sanctuary and uncertainty. The reflected forms extend this passage downward, as though the interior continues beneath the visible threshold.

The work’s symmetry lends the scene a ceremonial stillness, yet the boat-shaped form keeps it from becoming wholly fixed or monumental. It introduces movement, solitude, and the possibility of crossing without declaring where the crossing leads. In this suspended interior, light becomes less a symbol with a single meaning than a small, persistent presence held against the scale of the unknown.
