HALO AND UMBRA - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

At the meeting point of opposing forces, Halo and Umbra proposes a meditation on how difference can become a shared presence. Two figures stand close together at the threshold between cool darkness and a widening field of radiance, neither fully claimed by either side. Their proximity suggests not resolution, but a moment of recognition in which shadow and illumination remain equally necessary.

The central glow gives the scene an almost suspended sense of time. It does not read simply as refuge or revelation; its warmth is tempered by the deep blues and violets surrounding it, allowing uncertainty to remain part of the atmosphere. The figures seem less like actors in a story than witnesses to a change they cannot control.

Below them, broken reflections extend the encounter into the water-like darkness. The mirrored light is fragmented rather than exact, as though the world receives experience in altered forms. This downward echo lends the scene a contemplative depth, where what is felt cannot be separated from what is remembered or imagined.

The work’s drama rests in its balance: a small human scale held against an expansive, otherworldly opening. The figures do not explain the opposing energies around them, and their silence keeps the image available to different readings - companionship, division, or the fragile interval before a choice.
