GHOULISH MOON FESTIVAL - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

Against the blue-black canopy, Ghoulish Moon Festival opens onto a passage where darkness feels less like an ending than a threshold. Lanterns gather above the winding path, their warm radiance drawing the eye toward a distance that remains deliberately unreachable. The scene holds a tension between celebration and unease, as though light has been released into the night without fully dispelling what surrounds it.

The three figures at the path’s center give this vision a human measure. Their differing heights suggest companionship across generations, yet their silhouettes offer no expressions or explanations, leaving their shared direction open to interpretation. Around them, the forest becomes a listening presence, its tangled branches enclosing the glow while allowing scattered points of light to drift beyond any clear boundary.

What makes the scene haunting is the lanterns’ double character: they resemble signs of welcome, but their slow ascent also carries something away. The largest hangs overhead like a near, suspended thought, while the smaller lights recede into the luminous opening. The figures appear caught between following that radiance and remaining within the shelter of the trees, where mystery has not yet become certainty.
