Around its luminous center, Free Surface turns the circling movement of koi into a meditation on suspension and return. Their paths gather around a pale opening, suggesting a moment when direction loosens and the body follows currents larger than intention. The image feels energetic without becoming hurried, held in balance by the pull between motion and stillness.
The three fish do not seem to travel toward a fixed destination. Instead, they inhabit a continuous turning, each curved form contributing to a shared rhythm that is both ordered and unpredictable. The central glow gives this movement an inward focus, as though the surrounding water were continually drawing the eye back to a place just beyond clear definition.
Color heightens that sense of shifting attention. Orange, red, yellow, and white emerge against the deep blue and teal surroundings, not as separate declarations but as brief assertions of presence within a larger flow. The darker edges make the illuminated center feel less like an ending than an opening into further depth.
Seen from above, the scene carries an unusual intimacy: the viewer is close enough to follow the fish, yet unable to possess the world they move through. Their looping arrangement holds open a tension between freedom and recurrence, inviting contemplation of how escape and belonging can sometimes describe the same motion.
