FLOWING PRESENCE - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

Across a field of snow, where distance gathers into layered ridges, Flowing Presence considers the dune as a form of movement rather than a fixed landscape. The sweeping foreground leads inward with a sense of steady passage, while the mountains hold that motion in suspension. What emerges is less a destination than an expansive interval between arrival and departure.

The broad sky gives the scene an unusual spaciousness, but the cloud formations lend it weight and presence. Their concentrated whiteness seems to press gently against the open blue, creating a balance between air and substance. Beneath them, blue-gray bands along the slopes turn the brightness inward, suggesting depth that remains calm rather than dramatic.

Sparse clusters of vegetation interrupt the snow at measured intervals. These small dark marks do not diminish the vastness; they give it scale and imply a quiet persistence within an otherwise nearly unbounded terrain. The landscape can therefore be felt as both remote and inhabited, not through narrative, but through the signs of life that remain.

The work’s serenity is not empty or passive. Its curving snowfield and receding ridges suggest an ongoing shift in perception, as if the eye keeps moving even after the scene has become still. In that tension, the dune becomes a meditation on presence itself - something shaped by passage, distance, and the changing balance between what is held and what continues onward.
