Between gathering darkness and sudden illumination, Flickering Ritual turns the storm into a moment of exposure, where the sky seems to reveal more than it conceals. Lightning fractures the violet cloud cover, yet the brightest force comes from the warm opening beyond it, suggesting not calm after turmoil but a charged interval in which both remain present. The distant shoreline holds its silence beneath this disturbance.
Across the water, the reflected branches of light do not merely repeat the sky; they extend its agitation into the foreground. Their broken descent gives the surface a sense of inward movement, as though the storm has entered memory and altered the way distance is measured. The dark horizon, kept low and spare, makes the luminous sky feel expansive without turning it into spectacle alone.
What remains most compelling is the work’s tension between violence and stillness. The water receives every flash without visibly yielding, while the clustered silhouettes along the shore suggest a world continuing under extraordinary conditions. That balance lends the scene a ritual quality: recurring, elemental, and difficult to fully explain, with each new burst of light briefly changing the meaning of everything around it.
