about this painting:

Grand city and its legend

Saint-Petersburg, the northern Venice, city of islands and culture capital of Russia, has become a shelter for many talented people who were looking for inspiration and unique place for work and creation.

  • Its misty banks, fine architecture, cozy streets and numerous bridges were storied in songs and poems, depicted on canvas and sculptured.
  • Its ancient history keeps multiple secrets, remembers thousands of things, people and events and gifts a profound impression to all its visitors.

Saint-Petersburg is a city with specific thick character and inner rhythm which leave nobody indifferent. Leonid Afremov is not exclusion. He created the painting called «Evening River St. Petersburg», a splendid cityscape here.

One evening story

One can hardly imagine the city of St. Petersburg without its numerous canals, rivers and islands. Different water objects cross its body all over its area creating a water web. Thus, there are almost six hundred bridges grandly overhanging water. One of these bridges and one water vein of the city were depicted on the well-known canvas by Leonid Afremov.

The water surface reflects beauty of the marvelous evening. Viewers may only guess which season is right now before their eyes. It seems that the artist does not give any hints on purpose, in order to concentrate attention only on the beautiful cityscape of silent St. Petersburg, tranquil multicolored water and clear sky above.

The water mirror reflects all colors of the evening: yellow lantern light, reddish and orange tones of buildings, blue and violet tones of evening twilight. Two solitary yachts are rolling gently with the come and go of small waves. There are no any traces of human presence. Only windows lit with room light hint at life flowing inside multiple buildings.

The message of the cityscape

Cityscape art aims at reminding us how beautiful and majestic out cities are. Plunged into everyday rush, we hardly notice their silent presence, beauty, constant changes and fine refined souls. This cityscape canvas created by Leonid Afremov leaves us alone with the fascinating Russian city that is considered to be one of the most magnificent and atmospheric in the world. It makes us think about

  • great moments spent in our own native big cities, small towns and tiny villages;
  • their unique architecture, character and inhabitants;
  • their transformations and renovations;
  • all those big and small, essential and faint changes that happen every day and remain unnoticed by people.

I love this painting! It looks even more amazing in person than it does in the picture. I have never been to Vitebsk, but I got this painting because it looks exactly like a street corner I passed every day when I was studying in a medieval town in Italy. Shipping took forever since it was international, but it was well worth the wait. I hung it across from my bed so it's the first thing I see when I get up in the morning, and I definitely intend to purchase more of Leonid's paintings.
