about this painting:

DREAM ON

Understanding art

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you look at this magnificent piece of art? There is a woman holding an umbrella while walking through the park in the rain. But what does it actually mean? When it comes to contemporary art, not a lot of people tend to appreciate or even understand it. Some people look at a modern oil painting and say: my three-year-old could paint that it’s not hard. But art is not about complexity; it’s not about capturing life and depicting it as real as possible. We have photography for that. If you want to understand contemporary oil paintings or any modern canvases for that matter, we have created a short list of how to do it:

  • Look at the painting first and try to think of how it makes you feel. Do you feel angry? If so, why? Dig deeper into the inner part of yourself;
  • The beauty of art is that you can decide what it’s about without it being right or wrong. You can project what is depicted on it from your own experiences;
  • Learn about the time when the art piece was created, read about the events that were taking place and about what was going on in the artist’s life when they painted it, you might get a new understanding from all that information. For example, it was really popular to create realistic paintings in 17-18th century, because there was no photography back then. People wanted to capture the moments as they were, but at the beginning of the 20th century, when photography was invented, it wasn’t that important anymore for your painting to look as real as possible. Now what matters is the concept of the painting, the idea behind it, the methods you use and so on;
  • After your research look at the painting again. The artist has probably considered your role as a viewer and tried to paint it in a way that you would understand. “Speak” to the painting, try to understand what feelings you have and what questions you begin to ask yourself. If none of this happens, it’s okay; this painting is probably not for you.

Keep dreaming

This painting is called Dream on. Maybe this woman is walking in the park, dreaming of summer and warm weather, or maybe it’s someone else’s dream that she’s in. Who knows? Wouldn’t it be fun to understand and control your dreams? It seems hard, but it’s actually pretty easy. Here’s how:

  • First, you need to create a habit of recording your dreams: buy a small notebook and write your dreams down as soon as you wake up, don’t wait any longer. As you probably know, you tend to forget your dreams easily, usually within the first 10 minutes;
  • You can write your dreams on a computer, but it’s recommended to do it by hand, since it’s faster (you don’t need to wait for a computer to start) and it’s proven that when you write your information down by hand, it builds a stronger connection with your brain;
  • Create a “target dream” section in your notebook, and write down everything you want to dream about every time before you go to bed, try describing everything in great detail, the more details the better, you can even draw small (or big) pictures, describe exact locations on how to get to where you want to be in your dreams;
  • Don’t watch TV or read books before you go to bed – this can affect your dreams, and you will end up having a dream about what was happening in the movie;
  • You need to record every single dream you have, even if it’s not the one you wanted it to be; this is important to train your brain, it will help your dreams to be sharper and more vivid. It will also help train your memory;
  • Write down the similarities between your target dream and the dream you actually had, this will help you to control your dreams in the long run;
  • When you are about to go to bed, reread your target dream, then lay down, close your eyes and picture everything in great detail, try to hear sounds, feel the mood you are in, etc.;
  • Do reality checks: look at an object and realize that it’s a vase. Then look away, and then look at the object again. If you still see a vase, you aren’t dreaming, if it turns into something else, you are dreaming. It will help you do the same in your dreams, and you will realize that you are dreaming;
  • Once you realize that you are dreaming, you can do pretty much anything you want in your dream: you can fly, go to different cities, see any person you like – it’s only limited by your imagination!
