DIRECT SURFACE - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

Within a disciplined field of opposing forces, Direct Surface turns expansion into a question of order: how far can a structure extend before its intervals become as important as its boundaries? Interlocking forms press against one another without settling into a single system, giving the composition an alert, forward-moving presence. Its abstraction feels less like a puzzle to solve than a field of decisions still opening outward.

The dominant geometry establishes a measured rhythm, yet the arrangement never becomes mechanical. Pale passages create breathing room around darker anchors, while a concentrated orange block and the turquoise beside it introduce a sudden exchange of energy. These accents do not interrupt the structure so much as reveal its capacity for movement.

What emerges is a tension between containment and release. Rectangular divisions suggest walls, compartments, or coordinates, but their irregular relationships resist the security of a finished map. Small red, magenta, and ochre notes extend that resistance, carrying the eye from one point of emphasis to another without offering a final destination.

The work’s boldness lies in this sustained negotiation between clarity and instability. It invites a reading of expansion not as simple growth, but as the widening of a system through pressure, interruption, and renewed connection. The result is contemporary in spirit while remaining open enough for each encounter to reorganize its internal distances.
