Within its measured geometry, Direct Setting turns direction into a negotiation between order and interruption. Rectangular forms press across the composition in horizontal and vertical alignments, yet their overlaps prevent the structure from becoming rigid. The work suggests a map of decisions in which movement is continually redirected, and where clarity depends less on a single route than on the tensions between adjoining fields.
A dark passage separating several colored forms gives the arrangement a sense of deliberate pause. From there, the stronger accents seem to advance and recede without settling into a fixed hierarchy. This shifting emphasis lends the composition a contemporary, graphic character while preserving a sense of inward concentration - as though each block is testing how much independence it can retain within a larger system.
The pale ground allows these relationships to remain open rather than enclosed, giving the central structure room to extend beyond its visible boundaries. Small irregularities keep the geometry from feeling mechanical, and the light mark near the lower edge introduces a discreet counterpoint to the work’s firm architecture. What emerges is not a symbol with one prescribed meaning, but a sustained study of orientation, balance, and purposeful change.
