DARK SYMBOL - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

A charged encounter with self-possession and defiance, Dark Symbol presents a figure whose direct gaze resists easy interpretation. The face occupies the center with an intensity that feels less like a portrait of a fixed identity than a moment of choosing how to be seen. Bright planes across the forehead, nose, and cheek emerge from surrounding darkness, giving that decision a sudden, almost startling clarity.

The vivid hair refuses the restraint of the dark jacket, carrying its own unruly energy through yellow-green, blue, red, and orange. This contrast suggests a personality held between concealment and declaration - guarded in expression, yet unwilling to disappear. The small hoop earring lends the figure a precise note of self-definition without resolving the larger tension.

Around the head, the crowded abstract field seems to press inward, making the face feel both isolated and embattled. Angular forms and saturated flashes do not describe a particular street or room; instead, they create the sensation of an unsettled mental space, where thought, memory, and provocation meet without settling into a single account.

The dark shapes around the eyes sharpen the work’s confrontational charge, though a small glint in one eye keeps that severity from becoming absolute. There is vulnerability within the stance, not as confession but as exposure deliberately controlled. The figure remains unreadable in the most compelling way, holding its silence as a form of autonomy.
