about this painting:
THE HISTORY OF HORSE RACING
There are sports that are more prestigious than others. Horse racing is one of them.
This activity was known since Ancient times. One of the most popular entertainments in Ancient Greece and Rome was chariot racing. This kind of racing was extremely dangerous to both drivers and horses causing severe injuries or even death. However, Romans and Greek liked to watch it and always supported their favorite teams. Unlike other public amusements, women could watch chariot races too. Maybe, that is one of the reasons why races were so popular.
Later, this kind of sports became an activity for aristocrats and very well off people. It even got the name of ‘Sport of Kings’. For example, nowadays the British royal family still attends races. This is a very particular kind of even demanding proper dress code and behavior. However, the majority of people has never assisted to a race.
Besides chariot racing, there are many other kinds of this sport:
- Flat racing, which is the simplest one from a technical point of view. It when horses are galopping between two points on a track.
- Jump racing, when horses are trying to overjump obstacles. Especially popular in the UK and Ireland.
- Endurance racing, when the participants need to overcome longer distances.
This activity is not only a tradition but also a nice way to preserve military skills useful during battles that otherwise would be lost. Moreover, it is considered an artistic activity since technique and control over your body and the body of a horse are of vital importance.
HORSE ON CANVAS
Inspiration can be found everywhere around us. Leonid Afremov is always ready to prove it to us.
On this canvas, you can see a rider on a horse finishing the race. His arm is raised in a triumphant move, and he is impatiently speeding up his horse trying to be the first. It is a true union between a human and an animal united by the same goal. Even if you do not know how to ride a horse, it is impossible to stay indifferent watching such a passionate competition. Moreover, physical force and effort are as artistic as those of a ballet dancer and even more complicated sometimes, because you always have to mind your speechless partner (which is a horse).
Afremov’s dark horse painting, looks gracious and strong. This animal is one of the most beautiful and interesting creatures to draw, so here the artist obviously takes benefit from the situation.
