COUPLE WITH BIRDS OF LIGHT - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

A shared gaze becomes a passage into buoyant unreality in Couple With Birds of Light, where closeness feels less like a portrait convention than an invitation to enter a world governed by flight. The figures face forward beneath oversized golden-rimmed goggles, their solemnly composed expressions softened by the surrounding birds and the lively formality of their dress. Their companionship seems suspended between masquerade and adventure, open to affection, mischief, or a private code that remains just beyond view.

The birds do not simply animate the sky-blue expanse; they create a sense of thoughts escaping the boundaries of the image. Some hover near the figures’ shoulders while others move through the upper field, giving the pair an unusual relationship to distance and freedom. The contrast between the left figure’s cool, ornamented attire and the right figure’s dark jacket, gilded vest, and orange bow tie lends their union a theatrical imbalance, as though each belongs to a different version of the same improbable journey.

What endures is the tension between ceremony and wonder. The formal costumes suggest deliberate roles, yet the flight around them keeps those roles from settling into certainty. Beneath the playful surrealism, the work offers companionship as a shared willingness to look outward - not toward a defined destination, but toward the strange, bright possibilities gathering at the edge of ordinary vision.
