about this painting:
The city of legends
If you’re planning a tour across Northern Europe, you should definitely add Copenhagen to your visit list! This marvelous old city situated on three islands strikes the eye with a unique architectural mix and stunning sea views. Everything here is marked by the hand of time and the magic of Hans Anderson tales we used to read as kids. Colorful buildings with pointed roofs, a flock of fishing boats swayed by the rising tide, the rich smell of salt in the air… Using his favorite palette knife technique, Leonid Afremov captures the delicate charm of a night Copenhagen harbor in full color and beauty!
Basically, what we see on the canvas is just a narrow channel between two rows of buildings and a couple of boats moored at the pier. But the artist’s vivid imagination turned this simple scene into a firework of colors. Sparkling with a multitude of reflections, the water surface creates a luminous foreground complemented by the shiny silhouettes of the boats. The cute window-lit houses, painted in crimson and orange, look like fancy cardboard boxes with a candle burning inside each of them. The amount of light keeps growing until the entire background gets lost in warm yellow glow coming from a brightly illuminated building barely distinguishable through it. Finally, Afremov uses fine dabs of black, red, blue and violet to fill the night sky with splendor and joy.Very lucid, saturated and emotional, this amazing interior painting gives us a glimpse of modern-day Copenhagen as we know and love it.
