about this painting:
CLOWN AND CANARY
This stunning creation by Leonid Afremov surprises the viewer. What does the clown figure on the paintings mean? What is this incredible red palette about? Let us find out together.
The first thing you notice when you look at this painting is that the clown is extremely ductile.
- In the Middle Ages, a clown was a popular kind of street artist profession, which were one of a few sources of entertainment back then. So they needed to be able to surprise the public by telling funny stories and singing songs, playing musical instruments or showing certain tricks. And his position on the painting definitely draws your attention.
- The clown is wearing red like on many other famous canvases of clowns like the ones by Picasso and Norman Rockwell. He has a pipe in his right hand, which he is playing.
- He gazes right at you but you are unable to understand the emotion on that golden face. In the palm of his left hand, there is a colorful canary. Its upbeat plumage of sky-blue contrasts very harmoniously the clown’s dress. It looks proud and cared for in his gentle hand, and we can almost hear it signing.
Why do you think these two creatures are painted together? Probably, you have heard about the tradition of having a canary in a cage at rich homes. They look pretty and sign so sweet that they were considered as a perfect decoration. So, a canary functions as a clown as well, not by its own choice but by the will of others, more potential than her. Thus can we see that there are two clowns in this picture, while the background behind them is becoming more and more chaotic and unknown.
Purchasing contemporary art
Whenever you decide that your place lacks of decoration, remember original oil paintings is a great way to show your sophisticated taste. A real painting feels much more “warm” than an ordinary poster and gives to any room of your house a totally new touch.
Afremov’s art is very decorative. He tries to keep away from any stressful topics like politics or ideologies. Instead, he focuses on developing his unusual technique. While making canvases that are free of context and simple in composition, he applies an advanced technique, which implies using a palette knife for applying oil and not a regular brush. That is his receipt of making positive canvases of which you cannot take your eyes off.
