about this painting:
Sights of Europe
One of the oldest and most spectacular cities of Belgium, Bruges is covered with a web of water canals and therefore often called “the Venice of the North.” During his trip to Northern Europe, Leonid Afremov was greatly impressed by its unique beauty. The dignified architecture of the past centuries, with its red-roofed houses, tall round spires and arched bridges, takes your breath away as you roam the magnificent streets, oblivious to the passage of time. Struggling to capture the charm of Bruges on the canvas, Leonid Afremov dressed the city in bright saturated colors carefully selecting every shade.
Admiring the night
On this large wall artwork, we see a piece of night Bruges nearing the end of autumn. The colorful chunky buildings look rather schematically, with no fine details to be seen, but the peculiar architecture of the city can still be recognized in their distinctive shape. Each house is of a different color: red, blue, yellow, orange and green are combined in a well-balanced proportion that makes the entire scene very vivid. There is also a sufficient amount of light coming from the lonely lantern on the lawn, the houses themselves and the tall pointed building in the background that resembles a big candle glowing in the night, but not excessively so. The sky and the water are depicted in deep blue and violet, with strokes of paint laid very gently to form a soft transition between the shades. Piercing the cityscape likes veins, the pitch black branches of bare trees give it a mysterious and expressive look.
