Caught between momentum and fracture, Broken State turns the skateboard into a sign of unstable passage through the city. Its diagonal rise gives the work a sense of departure, while the dark structures around it press inward toward a brilliant opening. The board’s saturated red and orange underside feels almost defiant against the cooler urban setting, suggesting movement that has not yet found a clear direction. Rather than presenting freedom as effortless, the painting holds motion in tension with obstruction.
That tension deepens in the reflective roadway, where the surrounding city seems to dissolve into broken intervals of light. The visible trucks and wheels keep the skateboard grounded in physical weight, even as its elevated angle implies a sudden lift or interruption. The work leaves room for both readings: a charged instant before release, or the aftermath of a force that has thrown familiar balance aside.
