BROKEN CITY - Oil Painting On Canvas By Leonid Afremov

Between departure and return, Broken City places a solitary figure before a skyline that feels less like a destination than a threshold. The astronaut’s back is turned toward the viewer, withholding expression and biography, while the luminous opening beyond the buildings suggests possibility without promising arrival. Its strangeness comes from the collision of familiar urban forms with a world that no longer obeys ordinary earthly scale.

The figure stands where the city seems to meet an immense, unsettled sky. Deep blues and violets gather overhead, giving way to an intense band of orange and yellow at the horizon, so that the distance carries both warning and invitation. The contrast makes the astronaut appear suspended between what has been abandoned and what remains unknown.

Below, the wet ground extends the figure into a long reflection, doubling the encounter without making it clearer. This echoed presence can feel like memory, or like a second self still trying to understand the vanished city. The skyline remains close enough to recognize yet too distant to enter, holding the work in a state of suspended passage.

Small points of light punctuate the surrounding darkness, resisting the sense that the scene is entirely empty. They may read as remnants, signals, or fragments of a future not yet formed. Against them, the astronaut’s stillness becomes deliberate rather than defeated - a pause in which solitude turns into attention, and the broken horizon remains open to change.
