Across its measured band of recurring signs, Ancient Ritual 1 considers how order can survive the passage of time. The four central forms appear less like fixed symbols than fragments of a language whose meaning has been partly carried away, leaving behind rhythm, balance, and a sense of collective memory. Earthbound reds and browns give the composition a solemn gravity, while pale interruptions keep it from settling into certainty.
The repeated motifs create a ceremonial cadence, but their differences resist perfect repetition. Each seems to remember the others without fully agreeing with them, suggesting a ritual preserved through fragments rather than instructions. The narrow patterned borders reinforce this feeling of continuity, as if the work were holding a vanished measure in place.
What remains is neither a literal relic nor an illustration of a particular tradition, but an atmosphere of inherited knowledge. Its symmetry offers reassurance, while the broken transitions and muted blue notes introduce distance and doubt. The image can be approached as a meditation on what survives when belief outlasts the language that first gave it form.
