ALPINE CARRIAGE

Across the snowbound valley, Alpine Carriage turns a passage through the mountains into a study of distance and resolve. The enclosed vehicle moves away from the viewer, following a road that narrows toward the pale center of the scene. Its covered form suggests shelter, yet the surrounding slopes make the journey feel exposed to the vastness beyond the next bend. Rather than promising arrival, the work dwells on the measured act of continuing.

The two horses give the scene its human scale without making it feel inhabited. Their dark bodies and the carriage’s closed rear hold a private, almost inward atmosphere against the open valley. Sparse marks along the mountainside interrupt the snow just enough to suggest a world that is present but withholding, while the cool light keeps every destination uncertain.

There is a particular stillness in the tracks curving through the foreground: they belong to movement, but also to what has already passed. The road becomes a thread between solitude and companionship, carrying its occupants into weather that seems less threatening than absolute.
