about this painting:
Young Ballerinas
The young ladies
Leonid Afremov has quite a few paintings devoted to ballet topic. But this, unlike all the others, depicts young ballerinas – students of ballet school. The girls are just getting ready to become real ballerinas. But they already look quite feminine and elegant. They are all dressed in neat ballet outfits –
- white ballets-skirts
- shoes
- bows.
It seems that the girls are in the dressing room in anticipation of entering the stage and one of them, which turned her back on us, has already approached the entrance. Obviously, this is a very exciting moment for them. And we feel their agitation and excitement. Perhaps the artist managed to best convey these feelings with the help of the poses of our heroines — one of them turned her head to the other and is talking to her about something — perhaps it will help her to take off her excitement. The fourth, by the way, the smallest of them slightly tilted her head and thinks about something. Maybe she says some kind of prayer or other sacred words that help her concentrate. After all, it is known that the actors resort to different tricks to remove the excitement before going on stage. The color scheme in which the artist depicted this picture also symbolizes purity and grace – the artist used mostly soft pastel colors such as white, light and dark blue.
The ballet of the past
So we said that our young ballerinas from one of the ballet paintings by Leonid Afremov are dressed in white tutus. However, have you ever thought that such clothes were not always used in ballet? Many may be surprised, but until the second half of 19th century ballet dancers performed on stage just in elegant dresses, which differed little from those worn by the spectators. It was a dress with a corset, slightly shorter than usual, rather cumbersome. Heels were a mandatory attribute. Then, due to the new fashion for antiquity, ballerinas feel more freedom. Ladies began to wear airy, translucent dresses with a high waistline.
The painting of young ballerinas will suit both lovers of ballet and a simple lover of art. Everyone in it will find something congenial.
