about this painting:
Lying in the very North of the American continent, Canada has absorbed the sturdiness of winter colds together with the friendliness of the French who founded it four hundred years ago. This has accounted for a very peculiar national character of the country. There is a lot to see and admire here:
- Niagara falls, the highest falls in the world
- Banff National Park and the Rocky Mountains
- Bay of Fundy with its amazing tides
- Whistler, one of the locations for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games
- The CN Tower in Toronto
But no matter where you go, you will be surrounded by magnificent Canadian forests covering a tremendous area and rising proudly into the chilly Northern sky. Maples, pines, firs… On wall art, Canada doesn’t look even remotely as beautiful as it really does. No wonder Leonid Afremov is so excited about this country. Being an avid traveler, he has visited Canada a couple of times and painted local views on multiple canvases. This is one of them.
Winter is a peculiar time of the year. It is characterized by invisible strength that can be sensed everywhere despite the stillness that is spilled in the air. Immersed in deep sleep, the trees stand motionless and silent, guards of the wood carrying their duty even in the cold time of the year. Concealed by the layer of snow, their roots feed on the earth’s wisdom preparing to break out into blossom in a couple of months. But for now, they are just black bare trunks that have almost nothing to do with their spring selves. Even the sun hangs unusually low in the sky, as if it had no strength to lift itself higher over the horizon. Its muted glow spreads across the forest slowly and heavily, sticking to the nude branches and enveloping the drowsy river inch by inch. Solitary and mysterious, winter lulls the land in its snowy embrace.
