about this painting:
The many sides of umbrella
Once a new invention comes into use, it opens a fresh chapter in our semantic system. Over the years, it slowly strikes roots into our brain gaining context and accumulating meaning as we discover more and more of its properties and start associating it with things beyond its primary function. And in a couple of decades it’s not just a practical item anymore, it’s a symbol, a concept, a self-sufficient notion. Take umbrella for instance. A mere piece of cloth on a metal stick intended to protect our heads from the rage of nature. But if you give it a little thought, you’ll find out that it means so much more to you:
· By analogy with rain, umbrella is associated with joy, freedom and romance.
· It is also a symbol of protection, safety and comfort.
· Since it is a stylish attribute of many popular heroes like Marry Poppins, we often interpret umbrella as an expression of individuality.
Is it any wonder you are so dearly attached to your favorite umbrella? Nowadays they come in so many varieties of shape, color and painting styles that you can easily make it a telling part of your image. So next time it rains grab your carefully selected umbrella and make yourself visible in the crowd of by-passers running for shelter!
Gone with the rain
A vigorous downpour caught the heroine of the paining by Leonid Afremovoff guard. The city suddenly turned into a wall of water falling from the cloud-swollen sky. She barely snatched a second to open her umbrella when the sidewalk, the houses, the traffic lights lost their outlines and shifted from their usual places, mixed together into a raging river of color flooding everything in its way. Bubbling around her feet, splashing onto her jeans and trickling down her hair, the rain was leaving colorful traces all over her clothes and skin, more and more, until she was covered in all shades of the spectrum. Scared by this unexplainable phenomenon, she started running, hoping to escape the rainbow streams chasing her with a torrential roar, but the more she ran the more she got enchanted by this unstoppable outburst of celestial forces. In a couple of seconds, she will throw her umbrella away and become another bright stream in this surreal whirlpool. And long after the rain stops, her umbrella will still be sailing down the color-washed street, a lonely remnant of her former self.
