about this painting:
Misty Music 1
To the strains of cello
In one of his music paintings on canvas called Misty Music 1 Leonid portrayed a street musician playing the cello. He skillfully holds this complicated instrument in his hands. To all appearances, he has long been playing this instrument and this is his main earnings. He shared the fate of many street musicians - great talents. They could perform at the most popular venues existing at that time, but something went wrong in their lives, someone could not finish the music school, someone simply did not have enough money to get an education, and now they are forced to play in the streets attracting crowds of people, caressing their ears with their magnificent play. Despite the fact that he has not a large fortune, just a few cents in his pocket, the musician is what we call a sharp dressed man. He is dressed in a gorgeous suit consisting of a jacket, trousers, hat, vest, shirt and tie. Everything on him looks perfect - every article of clothing is brought to perfection. Under the hat we see the kind face of a young black man. It is obvious that the action takes place in America in the 20s - the early 30s, when racial segregation was still gaining momentum, and talented people from among blacks found it difficult to force their ways to decent life. That's why among street musicians you could often meet black people, and for sure it was a great success for spectators and listeners to meet such a musician - there was no need to pay anything to listen to a talented performer.
The upbeat mood of the painting the artist used a bright palette of colors that convince us that the musician has undoubtedly the success ahead and he will finally break through and take a rightful place in life!
These wonderful tunes
As we said the musician is playing cello. This instrument is not so popular as guitar and some other stringed instruments, that’s why we selected the most interesting facts about this instrument which might somehow make its image clearer to you:
- Count Vil'egorsky owned two beautiful cellos of Stradivarius. One of them later belonged to K.Yu. Davydov, then to Jacqueline du Pre, now it is owned by a famous cellist and composer Yo-Yo Ma.
- One day an original contest was held in Paris in which took part the great cellist The goal was to listen to the sound of ancient instruments made by the masters Guarneri and Stradivari, and to compare it with the sound of modern cellos made at the factory.
- Cellist Pablo Casals loved and spoiled his instruments. In the bow of one cello he inserted a sapphire, which was presented to him by the queen of Spain.
