about this painting:
LADY IN RED
Those who live in towns and villages frequently dream about moving to bigger cities, especially young people. There are more possibilities for culture and education, more interesting places to visit and people to know in megalopolises. Everything from food to cinemas and theaters is at arm’s length. Moreover, it is much easier to build a career here, particularly for intellectuals. You can find a job of your dreams, but also change institution where you work in case you do not like it anymore. Life here is much easier, but has its disadvantages too.
When you are considering pros and cons of living in a capital city or in the country, you need to keep in mind that:
- Although it is much easier to get food and water in the city – you just go to the store and choose whatever you need, it costs much more money and the quality is not so good. So, if you are used to drinking fresh milk and eating vegetables that you know are one hundred per cent organic because you grew them yourself, it might be hard for you to adapt to a bigger city.
- The same thing goes for air and the ecological situation in general. People are more likely to suffer from stress and, consequently, from diseases in places with ecological problems.
- Personal space is much smaller in bigger cities. You have to deal with the fact that strangers will constantly touch you in metro or buses in the morning or with loud neighbors who are having a party just above your head. It can be extremely stressful for country dwellers who can spend a whole day or week without seeing even their closest neighbors.
However, every city has its own soul and character. It takes time to get to know it, but the result is worth it.
You can see a beautiful lady in a red dress strolling down the street on this painting by Leonid Afremov. She is holding an umbrella above her head to protect her hair from the rain. She feels absolutely comfortable in a big city and certainly knows how to enjoy living there. By the cheerful palette, we can understand that Afremov himself does not consider living in a big city a problem. The thing that matters for the artist is the harmony in lines and shapes, and we can definitely see that on canvas.
