about this painting:
Gold Sailboat
Calmness of the sea
Seascapes and particularly sailboat paintings by Leonid Afremov are filled with slightly different colors than his, for example, autumn paintings, in which the artist uses many bright colors. In this painting, we also find many colors, but they, unlike in the autumn paintings, do not look so bright. Of course, looking at sailboat paintings by the artist we can easily feel the marine atmosphere that is literally imbued with calm and serenity. And all thanks to the soft colors that the artist used on these canvases. The brightest color in the painting is orange. We find it in the sky and certainly its source is the setting sun. Although it is difficult to say for sure what time of day the artist depicted – it can be either sunrise or sunset. It seems that the sun fills everything in the canvas, reflected in all its elements. First of all, in the sail of this lonely boat that sways on the waves.
By the way, a lonely ship is one of the main elements of the sea landscapes of Leonid Afremov. If you carefully study his collection you will find the image of lonely ships in many of his works – sailboat paintings. On the one hand, it certainly looks strange. But on the other hand, in such images there is a certain sense. However, a lonely ship does not always symbolize loneliness – the meaning can be much deeper. For example, it can, on the contrary, symbolize stamina and masculinity, inflexibility to the forces of nature.
Marine traditions
Life of sailors, especially in ancient times and even today, are associated with certain risks that is why the representatives of this profession are rather superstitious people. Here are some popular superstitions among sailors:
- Calm. The long calm for sailors was a disaster even worse than a hurricane. Calm periods disrupted the supply of goods, could serve as a reason for the untimely arrival of ships to the scene of the battle. The sailing fleet depended directly on the wind. This could not but form the maritime tradition of "causing the wind." In addition to prayer to St. Nicholas, there was a tradition of scratching the mast, preferably from the side from which the wind is expected. It is still practiced!
- Day of Neptune. Sailors are special people and their holidays should also be special. The schedule for a long voyage does not coincide with the official holidays of land people. The main holiday of the sailor is Day of Neptune. Traditionally, it was celebrated at the moment of crossing the equator. Those who crossed the equator for the first time was subjected to bathing and various tests. The neophyte underwent a kind of initiation, the purpose of which was not only the familiarization of the sailor with the "sea brotherhood", but also the "appeasement" of the sea god and his entourage. Today, the "Day of Neptune" is customary to combine with the Day of the Navy, earlier the main holiday of the "free sea brotherhood" had no specific date.
- With a song on the sea. In the navies of many countries, it was not customary to sing songs because the singing facilitated hard duty work, but the charter obliged to observe the strictest silence when working on a ship. Nevertheless, the sailors were famous for their singing, especially Russian sailors, but they did it in the hours specially allotted for this. Tank concerts were very popular and loved by the crew. During foreign voyages it was even possible to see dozens of boats surrounding a Russian warship standing somewhere on the berth in the tropics or on the Mediterranean Sea, and the natives thanking the sailors for good singing. Sometimes, someone from the mainland, asked whether there would be a concert. It was especially popular in the era of the sailing-steam fleet. It was then that many marine professional songs that came down to our times were created.
- Do not smoke? Today, when the ban on smoking in public places is widely practiced, it will be interesting to learn about maritime traditions regarding this habit. Tobacco was given to sailors with rations but smoking was allowed in special places only. There were usually places on the tank near the sawn-off shotgun (basin). Before cigarettes, sailors smoked pipes. Moreover, the sailor’s pipe should be covered. For a pipe without a cover a sailor was strictly punished. Ships wood was highly flammable, so strict rules regarding tobacco smoking were not a whim, but a vital necessity.
Of course, this painting as all the other sailboat paintings by Leonid Afremov will serve as a source of peace and tranquility for you. So if your life is filled with tense moments, then this canvas is just for you.
