It was then that many marine professional songs that came down to our times were created.
4. Do not smoke? Today, when the ban on smoking in public places is widely practiced, it will be interesting to learn about maritime traditions regarding this habit. Tobacco was given to sailors with rations but smoking was allowed in special places only. There were usually places on the tank near the sawn-off shotgun (basin). Before cigarettes, sailors smoked pipes. Moreover, the sailor’s pipe should be covered. For a pipe without a cover a sailor was strictly punished. Ships wood was highly flammable, so strict rules regarding tobacco smoking were not a whim, but a vital necessity.
