about this painting:
Follow the Leader
Hold on tight!
The famous Leonid Afremov's painting depicts perhaps one of the most spectacular sports – horse riding, which can be also called an art. Through the canvas, we feel all the emotions of athletes – sport anger, the will to win and passion. The artist managed to portray perhaps the climax of the race – when on the way to the finish the rivals try to catch up with the leader. They still have enough forces for the final push staying during the whole race behind. And now the leader already feels breath in the back, but he is already rather exhausted to accelerate. He literally cuts the heels of his legs into the sides of his horse and it is accelerating on the last leg. Let's hope that this acceleration is enough to win.
On the riders we see the equipment typical for this sport – a helmet, special boots and riding pants, everything is as it should be.
The artist selected perhaps the most appropriate colors for the background in which brown shades dominate. They are very well in tune with the color of the horses themselves.
In the saddle
By tradition, we’ll tell you some interesting facts about show jumping and equestrian sport in general:
- Show jumping is considered the youngest type of equestrian sport; it’s about 100 years old. As a separate sport, it originated from the hunting ride, where the rider had to ride over rough terrain, often full of natural obstacles.
- The first competition of show jumping took place in France at one of the fairs in 1866; however, the present shape the sport took at the beginning of the twentieth century, thanks to the young captain of the Italian cavalry Federico Caprilli, the founder of the school “natural ride”.
- The world record of the highest jump of 2 m 46.5 cm was established in 1913 by the thoroughbred horse Heperblyum from America who was holding it for 36 years. In 1949, the Chilean rider Larragibe-lem on the fifteen-year-old thoroughbred Juanoso overcame a height of 2 m 47 cm.
Enjoy the emotions and the amazing colors of the painting by Leonid and it doesn’t matter whether you are fond of equestrian sports or not.
