about this painting:
Fall Evening Colors
The autumn stroll
Autumn walk is a favorite plot of Leonid Afremov. In the painting we see two young people walking in the autumn park in the fall evening colors. This is a young couple who is not afraid of autumn rain and piercing wind. Under the umbrella, they feel quite comfortable and seem ready to walk all night long. They are not at all embarrassed by the fact that they are alone in this park midst the autumn chillness and slush. In their souls, it is as warm as under the glass globes of the lamps flooding the whole park with its yellow colors. And it seems that the park is the coziest place in the whole city. Only here they can escape from the ubiquitous eyes of the crowd.
We should also dwell on the colors that the artist used. The lawns are painted in purple color, which in itself is rather strange. Although sometimes there are leaves of a similar color in autumn, but they are quite rare and can hardly be found in this park. Most likely it’s all about the game of light – reflecting in the lawns, namely the lights add such unusual shades. Particularly beautiful is the reflection of the lamplight in the foreground of the painting – we clearly see three red-orange stripes on the sidewalk. Resembling small sparks they kindle bright autumn colors.
Let’s add some light!
Indeed, lanterns play a rather important role in our painting. Let's learn some interesting facts about the history of street lighting:
- The first street lamps were fueled by the oil that often caused incidents in the street: drops of hot oil often burned the gaping city dwellers. This continued until 1862, when the oil lamps were replaced by kerosene lamps.
- The first lanterns appeared in Japan in 7th century: together with Buddhism, they were borrowed from China. The first Japanese lanterns looked like stone incense burners, which were lined along the road to the temple. Then they lost their religious significance and began being used as decoration of the gardens and streets of Japanese cities.
- In Berlin, there is an improvised museum of street lamps – a section of the Tiergarten park.
