The secret of visual appeal

The art of Leonid Afremov is of a rarely intelligent sort. He doesn’t only paint the world as he sees it, he painstakingly selects every shade and carefully positions every element to reach the desired visual effect. After all, the way we perceive art is largely determined by optical laws. Due to its anatomic construction, the human eye tags different color combinations as appealing, dull or even inappropriate. The same refers to object proportions and correlation. That’s why we can fall in love with one art work and leave another unnoticed. Leonid Afremov knows that and creates his paintings in line with our color and light perception as evidenced by this sophisticated sample of Impressionist art.

Art as pure optics

Let’s find out what makes this painting “optically correct”:

1.   Complementary colors.

If you analyze the color scheme of the canvas, you’ll notice that the artist largely uses shades of yellow (orange) to paint the buildings and blue (violet) to paint water and the sky. These are the so-called complementary colors that form the strongest and most visually appealing contrasts.  Another pair of complementary colors used in this picture is green and red.

2.   Stroke arrangement.

Over the years, Leonid Afremov has invented his own painting technique that allows him to create very contemporary-looking textural paintings with a palette knife. Look at the way different planes of the canvas are painted. The water and the buildings are depicted very neatly and gently, almost realistically. To avoid that, Afremov adds a couple of casual strokes here and there and uses messy dabs of paint to picture three leaves and the night sky that give the painting a more “fictional” look.

3.   Overall composition.

Altogether, it creates a well-balanced and eye-pleasing view of the night city. The warmth of the buildings clashes with the enigmatic chillness of the canal water and fades way in the blue mist hanging over the arch bridge. The pier makes a smooth curve and we can’t see what’s waiting for us ahead, which adds even more mystery to the scene. The dark silhouettes of the trees pierce both sides of the canvas emphasizing the contrast between the rich violet sky and the golden glow of the street. The painting is finished. And it’s beautiful.
