about this painting:

DARK NIGHT 1

Falling in the dark

By  his painting Dark Night 1 which is included in the list of Leonid Afremov’s most famous and colorful paintings, the artist offers you to take a walk along the night boulevard and breathe the fresh night air. The painting was painted in a manner peculiar to him and using the colors and shades characteristic for the author. In the painting we see an avenue somewhere in the park wet from the recent rain. One even can assume that it is still raining because the couple walking along the alley holds umbrellas. It's a man and a woman drenched and hurrying home. Judging by the colors of the painting Dark Night it is rather difficult to determine what time of the year the artist wanted to depict - we see such colors as yellow and orange, green, blue and dark blue and even purple. Therefore it is not clear whether it is spring or fall. But definitely you can say that it's still cool because a man and a woman are worn in a jacket and coat. On the man we obviously see a coat of gray color. The woman is dressed more colorfully, which in principle is characteristic of women. She is clad in a long skirt covering her knees, and a crimson coat or jacket, and we also see the strap of her bag on her shoulder. The alley is surrounded by a real forest. The artist painted it using a rich palette of colors - we listed these colors above. In the foreground of the picture stands a tree - it has rather bizarre shapes and it is difficult to determine its kind. The fact that the painting depicts the dark time of the day, we can determine by glittering lanterns, which cast their light on the trees in the vicinity. However, at the end of the alley we see a light reminiscent of the sun. It contrasts a little with the rest of the palette - after all, the artist wanted to represent exactly the evening or night that you can see from the title of the painting.

Here comes the light

We are used to see lanterns in the streets but they, as many other things that surround us, are the fruit of technical revolution. So let’s take a look at the some milestones of street lightning development:

  1. For the first time, street lights were used in the early 15th century in London. Then the mayor of London Henry Barton ordered to hang the lamps in the pedestrian areas of the streets.
  2. In Paris, street lighting began to be used in the 16th century, when the French were ordered to put lamps on windows in order to illuminate the streets.
  3. The first functional street lighting system was applied in Amsterdam in 1668. It was invented by Jan van der Heyden, a famous artist who became famous during his lifetime thanks to the development of a fire protection system.
