about this painting:
The Tales Overheard
A certain (now exceedingly famous) playwright once postulated that human life was nothing more than a tale "full of sound and fury" which could also probably benefit from a more discerning narrator. Given the nature of his trade, the man was no doubt acutely aware of the fact that even such stories remained fascinating for other human beings: mostly as entertainment, rarely - as something more. Till this very day we are unable to resist them; especially if said stories were never meant for our ears in the first place. In many ways, a piece of art - be it an oil painting, a sonnet or a minuet - is more often than not simply a remarkable fragment of something inherently unattainable.
"Conversation" offers a tantalising glimpse of such a story. Who are these two? Where are they headed? What awaits the pair beyond the beaconing glow of the street lamp? Every day these unfinished tales and sketches of someone else's "magnum opuses" are washed up on the shores of our lives as flotsam only to be quickly discarded as irrelevant. But what happens to the ones we decide to pursue? They gain shape and meaning, become a part of our personal tapestries.
The oil on canvas can preserve a seemingly random motif, give it context and significance: clothe the uncertain twilight of the rainy evening in the understated teals and rich purples, paint the wet pavement with ochre and carmine. Let our wanderers keep their words unspoken and destination unknown without either rendering the tête-à-tête meaningless or undermining the journey.
If any form of art is simply a reverberation of the truth shaped by its creator to be appreciated by the public, then this original painting by Leonid Afremov is no exception. A 30" by 36" canvas is another pact between the artist and the viewer: its ultimate meaning is forged only in such a collaboration.
