about this painting:
All that swing…
The author invites you to the old American tavern or bar somewhere in the Wild West, where the honored ladies and gentlemen are dancing… not in the rain as you might think, but to the beat of swing. Reckless and jaunty, lady-cat and gentleman-cat are fully submerged into dancing swing. Musicians-cats are the real masters who produce a wonderful music, flowing from their instruments as if caught by the autumn wind.
Something more about swing
Swing is a group of dances that evolved during the "swing era" (late 1920-1940s), as well as modern dances that originated from them. Most types of swing evolved along with the musical genre of "swing", although many of these styles and their derivatives are now danced to modern tunes. Nowadays, swing is common in many developed western and Asian countries, although in every city and country different dances, their culture and "suitable" music are different.
To the roots of swing
New York is considered to be the cradle of swing. Namely here, in Harlem people met at music parties which helped them to forget about their problems and troubles and get relaxed and immerged in the atmosphere of repose and… dance. The legendary Savoy occupied the whole district being for meetings of the most skillful dancers in the city. Although its doors were open for everybody, even for those who couldn’t dance. Once in the club the newcomers learnt all the elementary details and started dancing at professional level in a day or two, so it can be said that swing connected people
So many forms
There are too many forms of swing to list them all here. Let’s name only some of them:
- Shim Sham Shimmy – popular linear dance of the 1920s and 30s.
- Apache – an old French dance from the suburbs of Paris, popular since the mid-1800s. The dance consisted of small performance in which a man, or pimp, subjugates or punishes a woman or a prostitute. The woman crawled away from the man who threw her. This is the only known early dance in which, as well as in Texas Tommy, a couple got torn apart. The movements of "apache spin" and "texas tommy spin" came namely from these dances, and now it's easy to imagine how they fit into the dance theme.
- Charleston – a classic dance, popular in the 1910s - early 1920s, related to Lindy Hop. Charleston comes from the African-American areas, became widespread in the 20s thanks to stage performances.
- Breakaway originated from Charleston in the late 1920s and is often associated with such dancers as George "Shorty" Snowden. The "breaking away" of partners from one another into an open position is often seen as the development of such dances as Texas Tommy, as well as an important step in the history of lindy hop. This dance is popular among those interested in the history of Lindy Hop.
