about this painting:
Paint the way you feel
We know many examples of paintings, verses and songs glorifying the quiet and mysterious beauty of autumn. Leonid Afremov is no exception. The artist has always been in love with this peculiar season and you can safely tell that from the amount of canvases dedicated to autumn in his gallery. At first sight, they might seem a little similar, all portraying rainy city streets, misty park alleys and glowing forests carpeted with fallen leaves. But if you look close, you’ll notice that each of these pieces is actually different and captivating in its own way. When asked how he manages to capture such delicate scenes, Leonid answered, ‘My big secret is that I don’t try to transfer what I see onto the canvas; I’m painting what I feel about it instead.’ Let’s see how this approach works exemplified by yet another autumn view from Mr. Afremov’s collection.
The duo of yellow and black
The most amazing thing about this romantic landscape is that it is basically made using just two colors – yellow, black and their shades. Note how they work together to create the intricate palette of the scene:
- Black tree silhouettes look especially graceful and eye-catching against the warm shades used to paint an autumn park.
- The rusty hues of the foliage echo the brown stripe of the alley on the right.
- Gentle yellow sunlight filtering through the leaves fills the park with soft golden glow.
- The background seems to be drowned in an orange mist blurring the outlines and creates a mild transition between different planes of the painting.
There are also a few fragments of muddy green here and there to create contrast albeit not too stark. Altogether, the view looks very refined, charming and even magical. Everything on the canvas seems to be made of light – that of the last sunbeams, that of the last leaves and that of the artist’s vision. With a couple of dainty palette knife strokes, Leonid Afremov showed us a moment of fleeting beauty and stopped the time so that we could enjoy it too. This marvelous autumn day can last as long as you like – just hang the canvas on your wall and return here to relive it again and again!
