about this painting:
The colors of the Carnival
Breath-taking water views, fine architecture and romantic atmosphere – that’s what makes Venice so attractive for all sorts of people. There is no other city in the world that would be even remotely reminiscent of its delicate beauty and unique charm. Enjoying the smooth motion of gondola, feeling the light breeze in your hair and dipping your hand in the calm water of the Grand Canal is a pleasure you’ll never get in a concrete-bound metropolis. Beautiful and inspiring, Venice cityscapes are a great wall decor option for those looking to refresh their home interior. Fascinated by the splendor of this city, Leonid Afremov created a set of oil paintings depicting Venice at different time of the day and year. This one takes us to the annual Carnival event famous for its unmatched display of costumes.
The three masks
The painting focuses on three figures dressed up as traditional Carnival characters. They are obviously in the middle of celebration, making their way through the city in festively decorated gondolas and greeting the crowd. Let’s take a closer look at them:
- On the left, we seea woman in the costume of a medieval queen. She is wearing a long ball gown, a sumptuous mantle and a tall crown indicative of her royal title. Graciously positioned in her own gondola, the queen is granting a slight curtsey to the cheering public.
- The next character is a young lady in a bright orange and violet outfit, large white hat and black mask. We can’t say for sure what this costume represents, but it looks just as colorful and grotesque as the rest. Unlike her companions, this woman is sitting in the gondola with a bunch of white flowers in her hands.
- Finally, there is also an adorable harlequin dressed in red and orange. Wearing a traditional foolscap and holding up a torch, he completes the trio and makes us wonder what it is like to see such a show with our own eyes.
