about this painting:
THE SKY OF AMSTERDAM
A city to remember
In his line of work, Leonid Afremov has travelled to many foreign cities, from popular tourist hubs to small villages lost in the woods. Searching for new impressions and inspiring scenes worth of capturing on the canvas, he visited Amsterdam, one of the most spectacular European capitals where magnificent architecture of past centuries coexists in harmony with modern neon-lit buildings. The city struck him with its beauty and power. Bewitched by the vivid and free atmosphere surrounding him, Afremov decided to create a series of paintings depicting Amsterdam in its full splendor.
Simple and marvelous
As most other Afremov works, this one is full of color and glow. The shiny water surface reflecting and multiplying every little source of light, colorful speckles in the night sky, gracious tree branches threading the painting here and there – all that is already familiar and dear to us. The loveliest thing about this picture, though, is the buildings. Painted in red, yellow and blue colors, with their cute chunky windows gazing curiously into the night and their roofs flattened by the darkness, they rather resemble doll houses than real constructions. But this clumsy charm adds to the unique appeal of the painting. We can imagine ourselves walking down the pier, admiring the fine architecture and watching the boat disappear on the horizon leaving a colorful ripple on the water surface. It doesn’t look like those elaborate, poetic landscapes we usually see on framed pictures decorating our friends’ walls. Instead, Afremov is trying to reach out to us just by keeping it simple. And it really works!
