about this painting:
The symbol of rain
We’ve got used to rain so much that we take this natural phenomenon as something trivial. However, we have forgotten about its power and importance, since without water there’s no life. In the past people personified the rain and believed that it was a mighty spirit: they used to worship it as a real god. Though nowadays we know that it’s just liquid water falling down under gravity, it is still a symbol representing a life-giving force, full rivers and plentiful crops. And besides fertility, rain signifies a number of other things:
- Renewal and change
- Emotional relief
- Dreamy, poetic mood
Many writers use rain in their work to emphasize important events in life of characters. Painters like to choose it as a theme for their canvases as well. For instance, rainy sceneries constitute a great part of Leonid Afremov oil paintings. Like the one on your screen.
Tonight it’s raining. People have opened their umbrellas: some are coming back home from work, others are just strolling and enjoying the weather. Shining brightly on the wet sidewalk, the streetlights add coziness to the canvas. Though it’s raining, it’s not cold outside. The city is quiet and calm, and no sudden gust of the wind will break the silence spilled in the air. It’s a perfect time for reflections.
The woman in the center of the painting is probably thinking about something in her life. She looks serious, maybe even disappointed, but the rainfall helps her breathe again. In the background, we can see another couple of by-passers; they are holding hands and probably heading to some cozy café or cinema. The water is running down the trees, streetlamps and umbrellas, it is washing out people’s faces that seem to flow together with the rain and merge into one surreal face painting design.
What’s really original about this piece of art is the author’s method of applying paint onto the canvas. Look closely at the background of the work – these thick multicolored strokes were made on purpose, they add volume and expressivity to the image. The vibrant palette encompasses the whole picture: you may notice that colors in the background repeat the face paints used to show the woman’s emotions. The painting is harmonious and sensual; it is bound to give you a great mood and maybe even wake your inner philosopher! Hang it on your wall and let the energy of rain flow into your home!
