about this painting:
The music colors
The painting miraculously combines the plot with colors – even the name of the main color and the musical instrument depicted in the canvas are consonant – violet and violin. As always, Leonid Afremov managed to find the best colors for the image of the object – in this case, a musical instrument – violin. The name of the painting is just Old Violin. And although it is rather difficult to understand that it is old – surely only professional violinists can say for sure. By some subtle elements it will become clear that the instrument was made a very long time ago and a lot of musicians played it, it keeps in itself the memory of hundreds of classical works. Perhaps being a family heirloom, it was handed down from generation to generation, as it often happens with musical instruments, people used to be more careful about such things and each of them was worth its weight in gold. These were primarily families of famous musicians and masters.
Acquainting with the violinists
Since the violin is a very old musical instrument, there are many legends and tales associated with it. Let's take a quick look at a few of them.
- Legends about violinists, who allegedly sold their souls to the devil, are known to all: let us remember at least Niccolò Paganini. In many countries, the clergy attacked violinists – even in quiet Norway they were considered accomplices of the dark forces, and the Norwegian folk violins were burned like witches.
- But not everyone knows that there were directly opposite plots! If we look at the more ancient time, we will find that it were angels who were actually originally depicted on the frescoes of temples and in the handwritten Bibles with stringed instruments related to the violin in their hands. In one ancient manuscript Christ was even named "beloved violinist". These facts were later hushed up while the frescoes were destroyed, but even now you can see a musician playing a stringed instrument on the fresco of St. Sophia Cathedral in Kiev.
We very much hope that Leonid Afremov’s music-related paintings like Old Violin will arouse your interest in music and you will discover in yourself a new talent – music one.
