Memories of paris
What makes it so peculiar?
Using his favorite palette knife technique, the artist put great care and love into depicting a typical Paris street lined with finely shaped lanterns, bare tries and ever-green bushes and smothered in a thick blue fog, with a silhouette of an anonymous gothic building looming in the background. The dim street illuminations are reflected in the wet asphalt sending a colorful ripple all down the alley. Smeared by the water trickling from their ledges and the eerie mist wriggling its way across the city, the buildings on the right look like washes of face paint and seem to be holding together only by your eye focus. To balance this sense of liquidity, Afremov painted tree skeletons and lantern posts in rich black color using distinct, firm and saturated lines.
Paris is the city of inspiration and romance. On his numerous trips to Europe, Leonid Afremov has repeatedly stopped in Paris and each visit was special. You never know what wonders await you on the street you walked dozens of times and seem to have learned down to every crack in the pavement. Small moments are sometimes more profound than entire lifespans and even a casual episode witnessed on a dull day can become an amazing revelation. Being a very imaginative and romantic person, Afremov has a rare ability to see beauty in simple things and capture it on his oils in a way that makes it evident to others as well. “Memories of Paris” is one of such paintings.
The combination of contrast
The artist also created an interesting contrast of planes matching a motley Impasto foreground against a soft blue-colored background with a smoother transition of shades. Overall, the painting features a large amount of black, which is untypical of Afremov who tends to favor bright, eye-sticky colors. That creates a curious interplay between the hostility of the cold mist-covered street and the coziness of the lantern-lit alley with its colorful rain-inspired stroke pattern.
This way, we get an interesting set of contrasts, including:
color vs. monotony
saturation vs. anemia
liquid vs. distinct
cold vs. warm
eerie vs. cozy
What can we say, Paris is full of surprises and so is this painting! Hopefully, it will find a suitable place on your wall!
