about this painting:
London – Fog over Thames
The misty river
Leonid Afremov tried to portray London in the classic weather for this city – thus, we see that the whole canvas is clouded by fog through which almost nothing is visible – everything is in the gray paint, only a vague silhouette of a yacht standing at the pier. Also, the boats stand in a straight line. But still, we understand that in front of us is a river – the smooth surface of the water is slightly covered with light ripples. From afar it may seem that behind the boat is a billowing wave but this is just a bridge sinking in thick milk of fog. It is not surprising that the boats are empty in this weather – even the most hardcore lovers of London are not primed for river walks in this weather. Through the thick fog you still can't see anything. It can be said that even breathing is laboured. Therefore, today tourists will have to stay in hotels in the hope of better weather.
In the foggy waters
So we have determined that before us is the Thames – the most British river. Let's learn some interesting facts about it:
- The length of the Thames is 334 km. Being so long and wide, it almost never freezes only if the London winter is truly harsh.
- Various vessels and barges are actively moving along the waters of this river, because the Thames is connected to other reservoirs by a multitude of channels, and therefore it is very convenient for the transportation of goods by water.
- In English the Thames is masculine. Therefore, Englishmen call the river “Father Thames”. At first, it sounds rather strange, but over time you get used to it.
- It is interesting enough that the Thames is a tidal river. One of its features is that the direction and level of the water can change twice a day. At low tide, the water runs in the usual way - towards the sea, and at high tide, the Thames becomes more affluent and the water enters it from the opposite side, from the sea.
We hope that when you visit this amazing city, it will meet you exclusively with sunny weather and dispel the myth that in London is always a foggy city!
