SYMBOLISM OF COLORS
Fine arts would never have existed if we didn’t have the ability to distinguish colors. There are some species of animals who do not have this ability like cats and dogs. However, for human survival telling colors apart was as important as running fast and communicating well with the group. For example, you can tell if some fruit is good or bad just by looking at its color.
However, later people begin to recreate life by drawing and painting different forms of it. Firstly, they thought that the most important thing is to recreate the shapes of different object for future generations to know what they are. After some time, there were enough testimonials of that kind, and people started to express their emotions and to recreate atmosphere.
Let’s look at some basic colors:
- This is the symbol of life, passion and energy. This color is very sensual and sexy as well. Nonetheless, for many centuries it has been also associated with violence and riot, since human blood is also red. When somebody uses this color, it always means strong emotion.
- Black absorbs light, that is why this color is the color of the night and some mysterious forces. In Christianity, this is one of the saddest colors associated with death and loss. This tradition is alive even nowadays. For example, we usually wear black to a funeral as a symbol of our grief.
- White is a color traditionally associated with God or heaven. In many cultures this color is worn to a funeral as a symbol of a deceased starting a new life. Also, it is a symbol of purity and peace. For example, a wedding dress is white since it is expected that a bride is a virgin.
This contradiction makes this color one of the most difficult to read.
- This color is sunny, happy and bright. Many people think that it is one of the most positive symbols in the palette, however, it is not always true. Yellow also symbolizes betrayal and cowardice.
What is interesting, is that different cultures give different meanings to the same color. Now we are talking only about Western European tradition.
LEONID AFREMOV’S ART
This contemporary artist knows how to uses colors. For example, this hugging couple canvas is a typical example of his art. Usually, his color palette is very bright and expressive but here he uses mild light brown to create a cozy atmosphere of a romantic date.
