BEAUTIFUL DANCE DUET
ROLE OF DANCE
Have you ever thought about the role of movements in our culture? Why, for example, people are obliged to dance on celebrations and special occasions? For what reason when we are happy do we sometimes perform strange and exhilarant dancing moves?
- The history of dance as ancient as human civilization. We can learn a lot about this activity, if we notice the behavior of wild birds and animals. Unable to speak, for them the only means of communication are their own bodies. This is how they tell each other the important information: where to find food, what places to avoid because of predators and so on. Up to the moment when human language was born, we also used our bodies together with indistinct sounds to communicate.
- After that, it took people a long time to elaborate the natural language and create and learn to express their thoughts and emotions. So, for a long time, the dance stayed as a means of communicating unspeakable emotions.
- Gradually, the dance started to be used in rituals. People were feeling that the words are too powerless and always leave something important unsaid, which was not to be permitted when they talked to gods, for example. So, they mainly used body movements to talk to their idols.
- For modern people, dancing is something that they do for pleasure and fun. It still greatly helps to express one’s feelings and get rid of stress escaping from the pressure of words.
There are a lot of nice and pretty oil paintings of dancing people. Leonid Afremov who is one of the most well-known artists of our century, has a whole series dedicated to passionate couples and lonely dancers.
On one of them, you can see two dancers performing, evidently, some Latin American dance. As you might know, Latin American countries such as Brazil, Mexico and Argentina have very rich dancing traditions where African elements meet American realities.
Afremov wonderfully managed to outline their figures without going into too much detail. That enabled him to create movement on canvas. The dancers seem to be frozen in a moment.
The color choice is extremely well done. Black and red on the blue background is contrasting enough to be immediately perceived by the viewer when he or she looks at the painting. However, it is not too bright to make the canvas look too heavy.
